Looking to explore an urban oasis near Hangzhou this weekend? Qingshan Lake in Lin’an district might just be your ideal escape. Recently, a viral video of deer roaming the fairy-tale landscape of Qingshan Lake has taken the internet by storm--and the best part? This real-life wonderland is directly accessible by metro from downtown Hangzhou.
In the popular video, a deer nimbly leaps onto the wooden pier. Around it, a herd of deer frolic in the water, their movements creating ripples that shimmer like liquid silver. The scene unfolds like a living scroll of paradise, making the adorable creatures internet celebrities. These new online sensations infuse this emerald fairyland with a dreamy atmosphere. Currently, 6 deer reside in the scenic area.
For those eager to encounter these agile creatures, the optimal times are 9-10 AM and 2-3 PM, when the deer are most active and interact warmly with visitors. Due to the recent rainy season, the scenic area has adopted an outdoor free-range system, making this the perfect season of year for close encounters with the deer!
One of the most remarkable features of Qingshan Lake is the vast forest above the lake in its northern part. This is a sight rarely seen in China, covering an area of about 1 million square meters. The forest is mainly formed by Taxodium ascendens, introduced from North America in the 1970s. Over the years, these trees have thrived, creating a unique landscape where the trees seem to grow right out of the water.
Strolling along the wooden boardwalks that wind through the forest, you can enjoy the scene of sunlight filtering through the leaves. It’s not uncommon to spot deer grazing quietly. For those who want a closer look, taking a small boat and gliding through the forest is a must-do activity. As you paddle, you will feel as if you had stepped into a fairy-tale world, with the greenery all around and the clear sky above. This is the manifestation of “Trees Growing in Water, Boats Sailing Through Forests” in the real world.
Transportation: Take Metro Line 16 to Qingshanhu Station, exit via Gate D, and hop onto the shuttle bus directly to the Waterborne Forest Scenic Area. The seamless transfer from metro to shuttle makes it a hassle-free journey for day-trippers and weekend adventurers alike.
