Longtime friends

For Andres Rotondo and Marina Indice, a couple from Rosario in Argentina, Hangzhou is more than a destination--it’s a cherished second home. Since their first visit in 2005, the pair has returned to the city 13 times, weaving business trips with a deep-seated passion for its landscapes, culture, and people. “Every trip has been wonderful. Hangzhou is where our hearts belong,” Marina tearfully shared near West Lake.
The couple’s journey began two decades ago when they traveled to China to source components for their company specializing in weighing systems. A business connection led them to Hangzhou, where they were instantly captivated by West Lake’s serenity and the city’s blend of history and modernity. “Back then, information about China was limited, but Hangzhou surprised us--clean, green, and alive with energy,” Andres recalled. What started as a professional necessity soon evolved into a personal journey.
Over the years, the couple forged lasting friendships, notably with resident Mr. Wei Ming and his family, who became cultural ambassadors. “They welcomed us like family. Without their kindness, our connection to Hangzhou wouldn’t be the same,” Marina said. The Rotondos have since brought their three children to the city, and now dream of bringing their grandson, Benjamin. “We want him to experience this magic too,” Andres added.
Their favorite rituals include strolls along Hefang Street, practicing Tai Chi in the park at dawn, and revisiting landmarks like Lingyin Temple. “In Argentina, people stay home. Here, parks pulse with life--dancing, music, and laughter. It’s unforgettable,” Marina said.
While marveling at Hangzhou’s rapid development--skyscrapers, expanded infrastructure, and cosmopolitan amenities--the couple cherishes the city’s enduring soul. “The historic areas around West Lake remain timeless, but the new districts showcase China’s incredible progress,” Andres noted. Even during the separation caused by the pandemic, their bond with the city never wavered. “We were worried that we’d never return. This visit feels like a homecoming,” Marina said, her voice thick with emotion.
For travelers, the Rotondos insist that West Lake is a must-see, alongside lesser-known gems like Six Harmonies Pagoda. As they prepare to visit factories, the couple stroll along lakeside trails once more, with a Chinese proverb they hold dear echoing in their heart: “Up above there is heaven; down below there are Suzhou and Hangzhou.”
