China Pavilion at Osaka Expo 2025
By Fang Jingyi
Organized and sanctioned by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), Osaka Expo 2025 kicked off on Apr 15 and will run for six months. This marks the second time Osaka has hosted a World Expo, the first being in 1970.
This year’s China Pavilion is themed “Building a Community of Life for Man and Nature -- Future Society of Green Development”. The pavilion’s exterior is inspired by bamboo slips and shaped like an unfolded traditional Chinese calligraphy scroll.
As visitors step into the pavilion, the first thing that catches their eye will be a digitally animated long scroll of the ancient agricultural painting Gengzhi Tu. Originating from Lin’an, Hangzhou, this historic work is brought to life through a multimedia art installation that transforms it into a vivid, seasonal tableau of traditional farming and weaving scenes. The installation portrays the poetic charm of rural life and the labor of ancient times, using modern technology to immerse visitors in a serene, time-honored world.
In addition, the producer of Black Myth: Wukong--the groundbreaking Chinese AAA video game that sparked a worldwide buzz last year--is also featured in the China Pavilion’s introductory video.
According to the China Pavilion’s schedule, Jul 12 to 14 will be designated as “Zhejiang Week”, when more Hangzhou elements are expected to appear at World Expo 2025.
