The rise of DeepSeek this year has generated a buzz in the tech world, driving rapid growth in the artificial intelligence industry and transforming multiple sectors.
On Mar 21, the Hangzhou International Communication Center (HZICC) kicked off its “Hangzhoufeel Training Program” with the first session titled DeepSeek and International Communication. The event featured three renowned experts--including both users and researchers of AI--who shared their insights with over a hundred attendees from the media, universities, and research institutions.
Dr. Zhu Chunxiang, a lecturer and graduate advisor at China Jiliang University, provided a comprehensive introduction to DeepSeek and explained its core models: Basic Model (V3) and Deep Thinking (R1).
Another key takeaway: crafting clear prompts. To ensure AI “understands” and delivers the desired output, the instructions must be as specific as possible. Dr. Zhu emphasized that tools like DeepSeek can enhance editing, summarization, and chart creation, and can even act as intelligent agents for repetitive tasks, capable of autonomous perception, decision-making, and execution.
How does AI empower design and communication? Dr. Zhao Jian from Hangzhou Dianzi University illustrated the vibrant potential of AI in the creative industries. Based on the AI development framework of “Perception – Thinking – Realization”, generative AI is reshaping the field of art and design. He pointed out that different AI models have distinct strengths, and the key is knowing how to apply the right tool to each task.
Despite ongoing challenges, Dr. Zhao remains optimistic about AI’s role. “Instead of worrying about being replaced by AI, consider how to turn it into a valuable assistant,” he said.
How can AI be used both innovatively and ethically in integrated media development? Wu Youxiang, former deputy editor-in-chief of Hangzhou.com.cn, and senior editor, shared insights on AI’s growing role in this area. He highlighted AI’s ability to automate content creation, intelligent moderation, and personalized recommendations. But such capabilities also raise concerns--issues of authenticity, credibility, and potential job displacement.
“No matter how far technology evolves, journalistic values will always remain the soul of quality reporting. We must use AI wisely, but never let it dominate. Upholding professional standards is our foundation,” Wu said, offering a thoughtful reflection amid the AI boom.
Among the attendees, Mr. Lou commented after the session that AI tools can be used for far more than just basic searches. Ms. Ye, a journalist, shared her reflections using the TV series Blossoms as an example, explaining how AI could learn the show’s unique linguistic style to assist in content creation.
Augustine Wereuche Praise, a Nigerian student at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, raised questions about applying AI in journalism. Dr. Zhu offered possible directions, including multilingual translation and text enhancement.
The HZICC will continue to host more events in the Hangzhoufeel Training Program, inviting leading experts to explore global communication skills and cross-disciplinary research to expand participants’ international horizons.
